Home Is Where The Heart Is

Heartwood Place is a charitable organization established in 2001 to address the serious need for more affordable housing in the Region of Waterloo.  Although our community has become a thriving centre of success for information technology and home to thousands of post-secondary students, there are many people struggling to survive on low incomes. Over 10,000 are on the waiting list for a decent “place to call home”! In the past five years we have made great strides forward and are committed to continuing to be an active contributor of solutions for this serious problem.

Why We Need More Affordable Housing

  • According to CMHC standards, housing costs should not exceed 30% of a person's gross income. Many single mothers pay far more than this - in some cases up to 80%. It is hard to accept that over 50% of them live below the poverty line!

  • Over 47,000 Waterloo Region residents are living in poverty.

  • One in five tenant households in Ontario is paying 50% or more of their total household income on rent.

Heartwood Place on Ainslie
HEARTWOOD PLACE is excited about its plans to redevelop the former Cambridge Reporter site in downtown Galt and build 66 new affordable apartments. We have worked with Andrew Bousfield, Architect,  Jamesway Construction and Premier Project Consultants to design an attractive seven-storey building with a façade which will complement the surrounding neighbourhood. Bright, spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments will include quality finishes, efficient mechanical systems, energy-saving windows and exceptional insulation. There are several advantages to this setting, including direct access to the bus terminal across the street and nearby shops and services.
