Fundraising Goal $20,400: Raised $22,608.70!!!
***August 25*** The celebration BBQ on Saturday August 25 at Winterose Farm, West Montrose was a good time for all, meeting the cyclists, hearing their stories and helping them reach their fundraising goal. Thank you to all our supporters!
Jordan Schmidt, Kyle Martin and Tyler Cadman approached us and here is their story. We're three adventuresome, bright, committed, determined young men. Also energetic, fearsome and good hearted! We like challenges, have benefited from growing up in good homes and have learned along the way what happens to people when they don't have an affordable "place to call home." We've been fortunate to receive a good education and have participated with local organizations as volunteers. This work has raised our awareness that many people need help! Now working in our community, we see first hand that the need for affordable housing is a serious concern. We have learned that chronic socio-economic issues like affordable housing don't get the same attention and interest as acute tragedies and news making events. We want to make a significant difference with support for Heartwood Place. We know its a top-notch organization through our volunteer work the the Waterloo Classic Road Race which designates donations to Heartwood Place and through participating in the Amazing Race for Heartwood Place. We are motivated to push ourselves mentally and physically to accomplish something beyond the realm of regular thought. We also know the 99 affordable apartments built by Heartwood Place have helped improve the lives of many people. We know that we will be successful with BIKE FOR BRICKS and hope our fundraising can push Heartwood Place over the 100 unit mark!!

Bike 4 Bricks in the Media
Plans for summer activities at HEARTWOOD PLACE were “ramped up” when three young men approached us about their plans to Cycle across Canada. Jordan Schmidt, along with his friends Kyle Martin and Tyler Cadman, were determined to make the trip and wanted a charity to align with their trip. Jordan and his family knew our organization through working together on the WATERLOO 10KM for many years. Hence, a quickly established partnership and efforts to garner support. Lindsay MacNevin had just begun her work at HEARTWOOD PLACE, embraced the challenge and soon had exceptional commitments from Royal Distributing and Marin Bikes, thanks to her long-time friend Doug Mochrie. Doug, founder of M. O. Social Media, with an entrepreneurial mind combined with a big heart, was willing to help out—provide bikes, teach the guys how to change tires, supply special equipment so they could record the trip—and then tell us that he had no idea how they’d make it across the country without experience in long-distance cycling. But he was there on the send off and again at the welcome home in downtown Kitchener on August 7 and shared our total amazement at their success. A celebration BBQ was hosted by Kyle’s family at Winterose Farm, to acknowledge their success, including raising over $22,600 for affordable housing in our community.
