HEARTWOOD BLUES has become a significant event on our annual calendar. Now in its ELEVENTH year, the music at HEARTWOOD BLUES has always been outstanding and the line-up for March 2nd is no exception!! We are delighted to have Fraser/Daley join us for the opening act. Alec and Mike met in New York in 2007 when they played with Jeff Healey’s Blues Band. Their music “combines the freshness and vitality of authentic country blues with close vocal harmony.” With their fresh take on the country blues, Fraser/Daley are winning fans across the country. Following them will be a stellar performance by The Paul James Band who thrilled the crowd at HWB two years ago. The place was hopping as soon as they took the stage. Paul James was recognized in 2012 with a Maple Blues Lifetime Achievement Award for Blues Music in Canada and a Juno in Best Roots and Traditional Music, many people have sung his praises. But that aside, Paul’s commitment to outstanding performances as “one of the best R&B guitarists in Canada” is abundantly clear. Matt Storch and The Usual Suspects will be the third highlight of the evening. Well-known in our community for their energetic, full sound music, they have delighted listeners at the Kitchener Blues Festivals and many other events, including last year’s HWBlues when the crowd insisted on more and more encores! They did not want the evening to come to an end. As a promised “surprise” element for this year’s HWBlues, Paul and Matt are working on an integrated performance which will be a special feature of the evening.

The Tenth Annual Heartwood Blues, held in March of 2012 was another exceptional evening with exceptional blues, lots of fun for aficionados, for those who came to dance and many who wanted to support a great fundraiser. Dylan Wickens & The Grand Naturals opened to enthusiastic applause, then Maureen Brown played the drums and sang to everyone's amazement and delight! Matt Storch & The Usual Suspects pleased the crowd for hours on end. No one wanted to hear the final note......they just wanted one more tune!

Established in 2003, Heartwood Blues has become a favourite event for music lovers and supporters of our organization. Initially held at the Victoria Park Pavilion in downtown Kitchener, Heartwood Blues has been hosted at various venues throughout the area, including Element, the Starlight, Stampede Corral and the Edelweiss Tavern. In 2011 we were pleased to add the Newfoundland Club in Cambridge as a new venue! In 2012 year we were delighted to host at The Alpine Club on March 31st! Two bands quickly confirmed — Matt Storch and the Usual Suspects along with Dylan Wickens and the Grand Naturals. Maureen Brown and Big Hand was our headliner!
Heartwood Blues has featured a number of impressive musicians over the years, including well-known locals Shawn Kellerman, Daddy Long Legs, The Waterstreet Blues Band, the late Mel Brown and Miss Angel, Cheryl Lescom and the up-and-coming Colin White.
Other popular musicians have included Jack de Keyser, Calvin Cook, Maria Muldaur, Liberty Silver, Lucky Peterson, Shakura S’aida and Big James and the Chicago Playboys. The line-up in 2009 featured Colin White and The Blue Ribbon Players and Cheryl Lescom and The London Blues Machine. Shawn Kellerman and Jerome Godboo brought the exciting event to a close.
The 2010 event was another great success with terrific music and enthusiastic guests. Held on March 12 and 13 at the Edelweiss, Colin White opened and impressed everyone with his array of talents. Following Colin were the award-winning Daddy Long Legs, Bill Durst and Steve Strongman who all provided amazing music. On both evenings, the crowds were delighted with the headliner Jordan John and The Blues Angels who made the event extra special!
The Ninth Annual Heartwood Blues was held on March 26, 2011 at the Newfoundland Club in Cambridge. A great line-up was organized by Mark Fortuna, well-known and highly respected for quality productions with incredible music. The line-up included Dylan Wickens - a local musician who already has a Maple Blues Award nomination to his credit. Bill Durst from London - who thrilled the crowd the previous year with his “supercharged intensity” - returned in 2011 with more impressive sounds. Daddy Long Legs, regarded as one of Heartwood Blues "favourites" and recipient of a Maple Blues Award, continued to please the crowd. Paul James, well-known as one of Canada’s finest R&B guitarists has a list of awards to boast about. But the crowd’s appreciation of his music and vocals were better than any award! It’s been said that “When a person places music and not fame, at the centre of their driving passion, never changing directions but keeping true to their conviction, this is the mark of a true legend. This is Paul James.”
