“HEARTWOOD PLACE ON AINSLIE”

HEARTWOOD PLACE  is excited about developing the formerCambridge Reporter  site  in  downtown  Galt  to create  66 new  affordable  apartments.  Working with theJamesway Construction Group, we have designed a handsome building which willcomplement the heritage buildings in the surrounding neighbourhood. BothHeartwood Place and Jamesway are committed to quality design and good buildingprinciples while remaining diligent about every aspect of the cost. The plansinclude an accessible Community Room where programs will be offered and anadjoining Coffee Shop where training and employment opportunities will beavailable for our tenants and downtown residents. There will also be room onthe site for a courtyard, adequate parking and landscaping.

The estimated cost of “HeartwoodPlace on Ainslie” is $10.622 Million. We have received confirmation ofgenerous funding for $4.62 Million from the Canada-Ontario Affordable HousingProgram-Brownfields Initiative. Other welcomed news was confirmation from theMinistry of the Environment to develop the property through a Record of SiteCondition.  The initial goal for our target for PROJECT HEARTWOOD, ourfundraising campaign, was $1.78 Million. However, through competitive pricing, municipal programs and other cost-saving initiatives, we could reduce that to$1.436 Million—which we have now achieved!

Support has come from many parts of our community and includes$300,000 from the Waterloo Regional Record, $150,000 from the Lyle S. HallmanFoundation, $100,000 from Mike and Hennie Stork, $60,000 from The EconomicalInsurance Group, $50,000 from Spaenaur and $30,000 from Dave and CathySutherland.  Generous contributions fromthe contractors include $136,000 from the Jamesway Construction Group, $60,000from Gosen Electric, $50,000 from Glenn Sider Plumbing & Heating Ltd. and$30,000 from Farwell Hearting Inc. A total of $466,340 has been given by other generousdonors, including our Board and Staff.

Additional support from Incentive Programs at the City ofCambridge included a savings of $99,000 through the Brownfield RedevelopmentProgram. Other cost-saving aspects of the project include relief of developmentcharges from both the city and the region.
