BIKE FOR BRICKS
Heartwood Place is excited to announce that three local young men are going to cycle across Canada in support of our organization with the goal to build more affordable housing in our community. Jordan Schmidt, Kyle Martin and Tyler Cadman approached us and here is their story. We're three adventuresome, bright, committed, determined young men. Also energetic, fearsome and good hearted! We like challenges, have benefited from growing up in good homes and have learned along the way what happens to people when they don't have an affordable "place to call home." We've been fortunate to receive a good education and have participated with local organizations as volunteers. This work has raised our awareness that many people need help! Now working in our community, we see first hand that the need for affordable housing is a serious concern. We have learned that chronic socio-economic issues like affordable housing don't get the same attention and interest as acute tragedies and news making events. We want to make a significant difference with support for Heartwood Place. We know its a top-notch organization through our volunteer work the the Waterloo Classic Road Race which designates donations to Heartwood Place and through participating in the Amazing Race for Heartwood Place. We are motivated to push ourselves mentally and physically to accomplish something beyond the realm of regular thought. We also know the 99 affordable apartments built by Heartwood Place have helped improve the lives of many people. We know that we will be successful with BIKE FOR BRICKS and hope our fund-raising can push Heartwood Place over the 100 unit mark!

HEARTWOOD PLACE is excited about completing its redevelopment of the former Cambridge Reporter site in downtown Galt with 66 new affordable apartments.
Working with Andrew Bousfield, Architect, Jamesway Construction and Premier Project Consultants,we designed and built an attractive seven-storey building which compliments the surrounding neighbourhood.
Bright, spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments feature large windows, maple cupboards, attractive bathrooms and quality finishes. The building has been constructed with ICF (insulated concrete forms) which is a very efficient and sturdy product which offers exceptional insulating values. In addition, there are efficient mechanical systems, energy-saving windows and durable materials throughout the building.
Another exciting aspect of this project is the Reporter Café, a spacious bright coffee shop which opened in July 2011. Named after the “dear-to-the-heart” newspaper which was closed several years ago, the Reporter Café is offering healthy food choices at reasonable prices. A “memory” wall of photos from the paper and wainscoting built with the bricks from the old building will help preserve fond memories of residents in Cambridge, many who worked at the newspaper and still recall their jobs.
There are several advantages to this setting, including direct access to the bus terminal across the street and nearby shops and services. Another positive aspect is the greater contribution of this redevelopment to the renaissance of downtown Galt. Although HEARTWOOD PLACE worked for six years to meet the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment to bring this project to fruition, everyone is very positive about the results! The Canadian Urban Institute recognized the success of the project with the Best Small Brownfield Development in Canada in 2010. Receiving that award was a significant achievement for our organization!
