Heartwood PlaceBuying the bricks... turning on lights... providing an address... opening new doors

Heartwood Place is a charitable organization established in 2001 to address the serious need for more affordable housing in the Region of Waterloo. Although our community has become a thriving centre of success for information technology and home to thousands of post-secondary students, there are many people struggling to survive on low incomes.

Over 10,000 are on the waiting list for a decent “place to call home”! In the past five years we have made great strides forward and are committed to continuing to be an active contributor of solutions for this serious problem.
Right now initial plans are underway for Project #3 for HEARTWOOD PLACE. Watch for regular updates!

Progress Report at 26 Ainslie St. S.

HEARTWOOD PLACE is excited about completing its redevelopment of the former Cambridge Reporter site in downtown Galt with 66 new affordable apartments.

Working with Andrew Bousfield, Architect, Jamesway Construction and Premier Project Consultants,we designed and built an attractive seven-storey building which compliments the surrounding neighbourhood.

Bright, spacious one, two and three-bedroom apartments feature large windows, maple cupboards, attractive bathrooms and quality finishes. The building has been constructed with ICF (insulated concrete forms) which is a very efficient and sturdy product which offers exceptional insulating values. In addition, there are efficient mechanical systems, energy-saving windows and durable materials throughout the building.

Another exciting aspect of this project is the Reporter Café, a spacious bright coffee shop which opened in July 2011. Named after the “dear-to-the-heart” newspaper which was closed several years ago, the Reporter Café is offering healthy food choices at reasonable prices. A “memory” wall of photos from the paper and wainscoting built with the bricks from the old building will help preserve fond memories of residents in Cambridge, many who worked at the newspaper and still recall their jobs.

There are several advantages to this setting, including direct access to the bus terminal across the street and nearby shops and services. Another positive aspect is the greater contribution of this redevelopment to the renaissance of downtown Galt. Although HEARTWOOD PLACE worked for six years to meet the requirements of the Ministry of the Environment to bring this project to fruition, everyone is very positive about the results! The Canadian Urban Institute recognized the success of the project with the Best Small Brownfield Development in Canada in 2010. Receiving that award was a significant achievement for our organization!
